    About This Professional Doctorate

    Course Description

The Skills, Technology, Research and Management for the UK Water Sector (STREAM) EngD is a combination of research and industrial training. Through your research you will have the opportunity to evolve techniques to tackle today's water sector challenges such as climate change, increasing populations, energy efficiency, and pollution control.

This specialist programme is a four year research degree awarded for industrially relevant research. Compared to a PhD, this programme provides a more vocationally oriented approach to obtaining a doctorate in engineering The programme is made up of three components:
-Acquisition of advanced technical skills through attendance at Masters' level training courses
-Tuition in Transferable Skills and Educational Leadership (TSEL) modules
    -A doctoral level research project

You will spend the majority of your time in industry developing scientific and engineering techniques and management skills. The scope and topic of your project will vary depending on your subject background, research interests and the company you are working with. You will be allocated at least one academic and one industrial supervisor.

STREAM is the Industrial Doctoral Centre (IDC) for the water sector, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and companies who sponsor research projects.

The STREAM programme is delivered by a consortium of five universities, all of which are centres of excellence in water science and engineering. The programme is co-ordinated by Cranfield University and includes Imperial College London and the universities of Newcastle, Sheffield, and Exeter. If you apply for this programme at Newcastle University you will be registered with and sponsored by us, although you will spend time at each institution over the duration of the course.
