Our EngD projects, run by our Materials and Manufacturing Academy (M2A), are defined by our long standing industrial sponsors and address operational requirements identified by these companies. Projects are focused on our established areas of functional coatings, computer modelling and advanced materials and manufacturing.
Research into advanced, structural materials is undertaken in conjunction with the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Materials based at Swansea. These projects are funded by the EPSRC Strategic Partnership in Structural Metals for Gas Turbines.
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is an alternative to the traditional PhD if you are interested in a career in industry.
The EngD is equivalent to a PhD in its intellectual challenge, but as a Research Engineer (EngD student), your research will be industry-led and your project will involve working with a company. The programme includes a taught component, covering both technical, interpersonal and management training.
This provides an unparalleled opportunity to gain experience working at the cutting-edge of research that is relevant to industry.
The four-year full-time programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught courses. You will spend at least 50% of your time working directly with a company.
As a Research Engineer, you will be supervised by two academics and an industrial contact within the company.
The EngD scheme was established by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to provide ambitious and motivated graduates with doctorate-level training, putting new ideas into practice and progressing careers to reach senior positions in industry.
Swansea is recognised as one of the UK’s leading universities for engineering.
The EngD is a flagship project of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), which part-funds our EngD programmes. The EPSRC select to fund prestigious institutions, who are pursuing excellence in research and have good industry contacts.
All EngD’s at Swansea come with a generous tax free bursary and all tuition fees are fully paid by the scheme.

All our activities are driven and underpinned by world leading research, as recognised by the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, which ranks Engineering at Swansea as 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines.
The REF shows that 94% of research produced by our academic staff is of World-Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*) quality. This has increased from 73% in the 2008 RAE.
Research pioneered at the College of Engineering harnesses the expertise of academic staff within the department. This ground-breaking multidisciplinary research informs our world-class teaching with several of our staff leaders in their fields.
